A Beginner's Guide to Google Business Profile for UAE Small Businesses
If your business has a physical address or serves a specific area, Google Business Profile is very likely the single highest-value free listing available to you — and it's also one of the most commonly half-finished. Here's what it actually does and how to set it up properly.
What it actually is
Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is the free listing that shows up when someone searches your business name directly, or searches for what you do plus a location ("web design agency Abu Dhabi"). It's what puts your business on Google Maps, shows your hours and phone number directly in search results, and — for local searches — often appears above the normal list of websites entirely, in the "local pack" of three map results.
Why it matters more than a lot of businesses assume
A well-optimised website can rank well and still lose the click to a competitor's Business Profile sitting above it with a map pin, a phone number, and reviews visible before anyone even reaches the organic results. For a local search like "digital agency near me" or "web designer in Sharjah," the Business Profile often gets more visibility than the website itself.
Setting one up properly
- Claim and verify. Google verifies ownership via a phone call, text, email, or a postcard sent to your business address, depending on your business type. This step can't be skipped or done on your behalf by an agency — it has to come back to a channel you control.
- Pick the right category. "Marketing Agency," "Website Designer" and "Advertising Agency" are all different Google categories with different search behaviour attached — choose the one that matches what people actually search for, not just the most impressive-sounding title.
- Fill in every field, not just the required ones. Hours, service areas, a real description, and photos all factor into how complete (and how well-ranked) your profile is.
- List service areas explicitly if you serve multiple cities. A profile can list a primary address and a set of service areas — for a business working across Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman and Ras Al Khaimah, that's the field doing the heavy lifting for multi-city visibility, not separate listings.
- Ask for reviews, and reply to every one. Review count and recency are both ranking factors Google has publicly acknowledged, and a business that responds to reviews (good or bad) signals active management.
What a website can and can't do here
A website can — and should — link to your Business Profile, embed a map, and keep your name/address/phone consistent everywhere it appears (a mismatch between your website and your listing is a known ranking drag). What it can't do is replace the listing itself, or skip the verification step for you. This is one part of local SEO that has to happen on the business side, not the website side.
If you'd like a second pair of eyes on your profile once it's set up — or help making sure your website and listing stay consistent — that's exactly the kind of thing we check as part of Digital & Social Media Marketing.
