Generative Engine Optimization (GEO): Getting Your Business Recommended by AI Assistants

23 August 2026

A growing number of searches now happen inside a chat window, not a search bar — someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity "which agency in Abu Dhabi can redesign my website" instead of typing it into Google. Getting mentioned in that answer is a newer discipline people have started calling Generative Engine Optimization, or GEO. It's worth understanding honestly, including what's still unproven.

What GEO actually means

Instead of optimising for a ranking position in a list of blue links, GEO is about being the kind of source an AI system is likely to cite or paraphrase when it generates an answer. These systems work by drawing on content that's clear, specific, and confidently attributable to a real source — which is a genuinely different target than "rank on page one," even though the underlying content quality bar is similar.

What's known to help right now

Direct, specific answers to specific questions. Content structured as a clear question followed by a clear answer — the format behind our own FAQ hub — maps well onto how these systems retrieve and quote information, because there's no ambiguity to resolve about what's actually being answered.

Structured data. Schema markup (the machine-readable data describing what a page actually is — a service, an FAQ, a business) makes a page's content unambiguous to any system parsing it, human-search or AI. It's the same markup that supports normal SEO, covered in how SEO actually grows traffic.

Being genuinely accurate and specific. Vague marketing language gives an AI system nothing concrete to cite. Real, specific detail — what a service actually includes, what a project actually took — is both better for a human reader and more citable.

What's overhyped

A specific file called llms.txt (a proposed standard for telling AI crawlers what a site contains) gets recommended constantly, but Google's John Mueller has said it doesn't actually help an AI system decide which site to surface for a given query — every site's llms.txt file can make the same claims about itself, so it gives the system nothing to tell them apart on. We publish one on this site as a low-cost, low-risk addition — but we wouldn't recommend spending real budget chasing it as if it were a proven lever.

The overlap with ordinary SEO is the real story

GEO isn't a separate discipline competing with SEO for budget — it rewards almost exactly the same fundamentals: genuinely useful, specific, well-structured content, covered from the local-search angle in local SEO for UAE businesses. Treating them as one connected effort, rather than two competing projects, is the more honest way to plan for it — which is how we approach it inside Digital & Social Media Marketing.
